Same great Haymarket flavor, fewer columns!
Got a couple ideas ready for the beginning of the year, but I definitely need more time and a clearer headspace to get them fleshed out. In the meantime, this is where I would normally do my sign-off of "When nothing seems to go right, go left", but I have a bit of a plea. My roommates and I are potentially looking at a legal fight with our landlord due to the property manager's failure to do upkeep, and the residence may end up being uninhabitable due to the failure of the property manager to weatherproof and insulate, along with their failure to notify of a roach infestation against which we can only do surface-level attacks. Because of this, we're looking to break the lease in a way that doesn't impact our credit or renter history and allows us to retain our deposit. I don't see that ending entirely well, so here's the actual plea. I am looking to secure my own place and need assistance with a deposit. I earn what I do, but the rent in these parts is a minimum of $1100, and my credit level makes it clear that I'll be needing to match the first month rent for the deposit. I want to try and raise this by February 12, 2022, and paypal donations are greatly appreciated (see the Tip button on the puzzle applet). Thank you.

As a retired (or, as I like to say, recovering) lawyer, I think you may have a case that the landlord has engaged in "constructive eviction," in which case you would have the right to get out of your lease penalty-free. However, I have no idea what Texas law is like on this (probably not particularly tenant-friendly). You might want to contact the local Legal Aid office.
